Postoc Project: The immune capacity of human bone marrow in the context of arthroplasty
Brief Description
We are looking for a motivated PhD student (E13 TVÖD, 65%, min. 3 years) for a research project on "The immune capacity of human bone marrow in the context of arthroplasty". You should have a diploma or master degree and a high enthusiasm for topics at the interface between the research areas of tissue regeneration and clinical immunology.
Your Responsibilities
In an aging society, arthroplasty has made an invaluable contribution to enabling painless mobility even in old age. Despite the overall great success of joint replacement, there are several reports of serious complications caused by metal wear and corrosion particles from the implant. The goal of the project is to better understand the long-term consequences of chronic inflammatory conditions in bone marrow and bone and to transfer this to other indications. Beyond the question of metal exposure, the project thus makes a significant contribution to a better understanding of the molecular and cellular regulatory cascades between bone and bone marrow.
You will be expected to learn and apply the following techniques as part of your work with us:
- Functional characterization of human cells & tissues in 2D co-culture assays and 3D organ-on-a-chip systems
- State-of-the-art 3D imaging techniques (including cutting-edge µCT techniques)
- An extensive spectrum of molecular and cell biological methods, including flow cytometry, innovative technologies for transcriptome and proteome analysis (incl. MALDI imaging), technologies for ex vivo & in vitro screening (e.g. multiplex ligand assays), etc.
What we offer:
- Opportunity to actively contribute, take responsibility and develop processes in a young and dynamic team
- Your personal development in a research environment that combines basic science with applied research
Your Profile
- Diploma or Master's degree in biology, biochemistry, biotechnology or comparable with great enthusiasm for clinical research
- Basic understanding of molecular and cell biology and first experiences with methods of molecular biology (Western blot, PCR, etc.) and different cell culture techniques
- analytical mindset and experience with evaluation and presentation of complex data
- Strong communication skills with regard to clinical staff and patients
- Strong team-oriented character with high self-motivation and creativity
- High flexibility to the needs of clinical studies
- Enthusiasm for clinically relevant research questions and working in highly interdisciplinary project groups
- Experience in the analysis of large data sets with appropriate software (e.g. R) is desirable
