Expertise

Prof. Dr. Georg Duda is interested in the tension between the fields of Biology and Mechnics. He is involved in investigating the interaction between bone and muscles as well as the biomechnical influences and its impacts in both the intact and injured musculoskeletal system (e.g. loading of joints and bones).

Prof. Duda focuses in articular on the on the interaction between the physical and mechanical conditions, and the biological regeneration of the musculoskeletal system. By using examples of bone and cartilage healing, he demonstrated the importance of biomechanical characteristics for cells and tissues of the human musculoskeletal system. He showed that a certain amount of mechanical stimulation is helpful to healing, while too much could result in a delay to the healing processes.

Prof. Duda is also involved in the research on regenerative medicine. With his work he aims to understand the body's own processes and, where necessary, to stimulate them, so as to reproduce natural regeneration of the musculoskeletal system.

The basic understanding of mechanical stimulation helps activation of the endogenous healing processes to be targeted, understood and guided.

Vita Univ.- Prof. Dr.-Ing. Georg Duda

Georg Duda studied Biomedical Engineering at the Technical University in Berlin and obtained his PhD in Biomechanics at the Technical University of Hamburg-Harburg in 1996. After research stays at Mayo Clinic and Johns-Hopkins University he became Head of the Research Department of the Center for Musculoskeletal Surgery (CMSC) at Charité in 1997. He is Director of the Julius Wolff Institute of Biomechanics and Musculoskeletal Regeneration at the Charité and since 2016 a Faculty Member of the Wyss Institute at Harvard University. In 2020, Professor Duda accepted the position as BIH Chair for Engineering Regenerative Therapies and has been elected Member of the Senate of the German Research Foundation (DFG). Since 2021 he is Speaker of the BIH Center for Regenerative Therapies (BCRT).
