Crosstalk in Bone Regeneration

The DFG CRC 1444 “Directed Cellular Self‐Organization to Advance Bone Regeneration” aims to unravel the basic mechanisms that differentiate between success and failure in regeneration of musculoskeletal tissue using bone healing as a role model. In particular, we want to investigate the interdependencies of inflammation, metabolism and mechanics in cellular self‐organization during the process of bone regeneration.”
Bone is one of the few tissues in the body that has the general capability of scar less, endogenous regeneration resulting in complete functional and structural reconstitution. Thus, bone is an ideal model system to evaluate the effect of stress factors or constraints of healing on a cellular and tissue level. Basic knowledge about molecules of the extracellular matrix, the immune response and the function of stem and progenitor cells during regeneration has cumulated over the last decade. Nevertheless, the interconnectivity of different aspects of the healing cascade is often underestimated in research studies. A prerequisite for the successful implementation of regenerative medicine is an understanding of the complex mechanisms interacting during regeneration.
By initiating discussion and interaction between basic disciplines involved in investigating the regeneration of musculoskeletal tissues, we aim to strengthen exchange between the disciplines that are essential for initiating new concepts specifically for those patients in need of new therapies. This symposium will try to combine different angles of regeneration, offering the possibility to discuss with specialists form different regenerative fields the importance of the interdependency of different tissues and cellular systems in regeneration, thus opening the possibility to begin an interaction between immunological, stem cell based, mechanical, and metabolic aspects of regeneration.
